A single-vehicle crash into a fire hydrant and power pole Wednesday in Solvang sent two people to the hospital and damaged a nearby building.

At approximately 5:45 p.m., personnel from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department and an American Medical Response ambulance were dispatched to the crash scene near the intersection of Viborg and Alamo Pintado roads in Solvang, according to Karen Cruz-Orduña from the Fire Department.

An SUV struck a fire hydrant before slamming into a utility pole compromising power lines.

The impact also launched the fire hydrant into a nearby building.

Personnel from the Santa Barbara County Air Support Unit also were dispatched.

One patient was taken by ground ambulance to the Santa Ynez Airport to be transported by helicopter to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

A ground ambulance also took a second patient to the hospital.

Both patients received moderate injuries, Cruz-Orduña added.

Employees were inside the building at the time but no injuries were reported by anyone in the business, she added.

Video from the scene appears to show a broken window and gouged plaster to the exterior of the business along with broken glass inside.

The yellow fire hydrant ended up landing in a landscaped area with rocks below the window.

The cause of the crash was being investigated by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident left a power pole and lines in a precarious position, so firefighters requested that Pacific Gas & Electric Co. personnel respond to the scene, according to emergency dispatch reports.

The wreckage and emergency vehicles blocked Alamo Pintado Road in the area for a time Wednesday.

Additional information was not immediately available.
