One person was killed and two men were seriously injured late Thursday night in a suspected DUI vehicle crash on Cathedral Oaks Road in Goleta.

A Ford pickup truck slammed into a tree and caught fire at about 11 p.m. on the right shoulder of Cathedral Oaks, just west of Kellogg Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver, 18-year-old Daniel VelezValerio of Santa Barbara, and a 22-year-old passenger, Patrick J. Marasciullo of Isla Vista, had major injuries from the crash, “including but not limited to multiple lacerations and severe burns to several areas of their bodies,” CHP Officer Michael Fabila said Friday.

A second passenger, also a 22-year-old male, was fatally injured in the crash, according to the CHP.

The cause of the crash was under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. VelezValerio was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, Fabila said.

One male patient had to be extricated from the wreckage, according to Capt. Scott Safechuck of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

Both of the injured men were taken by AMR ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

Cathedral Oaks Road was shut down for about 11 hours for the crash investigation, according to the CHP.
