Tyler Hughes of San Marcos scooped up a ground ball in sudden victory overtime, ran across the midfield and fed a perfect pass to freshman Luke Matthews for the game-winning goal to beat Dos Pueblos, 9-8, in a Channel League boys lacrosse thriller on Thursday at Scott O’Leary Stadium.
Matthews’ game winner spoiled a Dos Pueblos comeback from a 6-3 halftime deficit. The Chargers tied the score at 8-8 with 35 seconds remaining in regulation.
Led by Hughes and the tough defense of Eli Heinze and Seamus Russell, San Marcos controlled the first half.
But DP stepped up its play in the second half and held the Royals to two goals.

Hughes and his teammates weathered the storm and pulled off the win in overtime.
Hughes’ stat line included five goals, two assists, four ground balls, two takeaways and four face-off wins.
Matthews scored three goals for San Marcos.
