After breaking through for three runs in the seventh in Friday’s series opener, the UCSB softball team carried that momentum to Saturday and posted 17 runs in two games to finish off a sweep at Cal State Bakersfield.

The Gaucho prevailed in a see-saw first game, 7-6, and rallied for a 10-6 win in the nightcap.

UCSB improves to 22-11 overall and 9-3 in the Big West.

First Game
A back-and-forth game saw UCSB a prevail late to stay undefeated in the month of April.

The Gauchos opened the scoring in the first inning as they plated two to take an early lead. In the third, Lucy Morgan hit a sac fly to bring in another run and extend the Gauchos’ lead to 3-0. Bakersfield quickly responded scoring three in their half of the third to tie the game at three a piece.

The Gauchos regained the lead after Ashley Donaldson tripled and a sac fly by Alexa Sams brought in two more runs. In the bottom half of the fourth, the Roadrunners tied the game up again with a two-run home run.

The Gauchos did not let the runs affect them as they came back and scored two runs to take a 7-5 lead. Lucy Morgan doubled in Korie Thomas and Bella Fuentes brought in Morgan for the two Gaucho runs in the inning.

Bakersfield scratched one across in the sixth to make it a one-run game, but Camryn Snyder shut down the Roadrunners the rest of the way.

Second Game
A slow start in game two turned into an offensive clinic for the Gauchos as they exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning to take complete control of the game.

The Roadrunners got out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on two hits and taking advantage of one UCSB error. From there, it became all Gauchos. They tied the game in the third with a Donaldson ground out, a Sams single, and a Hannah Damore single.

After being held scoreless in the fourth, the Gauchos scored seven runs on six hits and took advantage of two Bakersfield errors in the fifth. Four of the six hits in the inning went for extra bases as they took complete control.

The Roadrunners put up a run in the sixth and two in the seventh, but it would not be enough as UCSB won its seventh consecutive game and remained unbeaten in April.

The Gauchos return home for a three-game series against Long Beach State. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 p.m., April 15 with a single game on Sunday, April 16 at 1 p.m.
