Redshirt freshman Owen Birg had a big night for the UCSB men’s volleyball team, blasting 19 kills and picking up 10 digs in a 23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-20 win over Vanguard at Rob Gym on Wednesday.
It was the Gauchos’ final tuneup before starting Big West play on Friday against UC San Diego at Rob Gym.
Setter Jack Walmer put up a double-double with 42 assists and 12 digs. He also led the team with five service aces.
Ryan Wilcox put down 14 kills and assisted on four blocks.
Santa Barbara High alum Sam Meister added to the attack with seven kills and had only one error on 13 swings for a .462 hitting percentage.
Libero Max Gordon picked up a match-high 13 digs.
For Friday’s Big West opener, fans will be given crazy wigs to support the team.
