The UC Santa Barbara women’s tennis team gave No. 2-ranked Texas A&M a battle before falling, 4-1, in a second-round NCAA Tournament match in College Station on Saturday.

The Gauchos pushed the Aggies to three sets in two of the singles matches. No. 1 player Amelia Horner defeated A&M’s Mary Stoiana in a tiebreaker in the first set and rallied from a 5-2 deficit to take a 6-5 lead in the second.

But the match was suspended as Texas A&M’s Lexington Reed won a third set over Katarina Vayser on court six to clinch the 4-1 victory for the defending national champions.

The Aggies won the doubles point and captured matches 2, 5 and 6 in singles.

UCSB’s lone win came from Raphaelle Leroux at No. 4. She defeated Lucciana Perez, 6-1, 6-3.

The Big West champions end the season at 17-9. Texas A&M advances to the third round with a record of 27-3.
