The UCSB women’s water polo team opened its season Friday splitting games as the host of its annual Winter Invite.

The 18th-ranked Gauchos beat Ottawa of Arizona 19-7 and then fell to 16th-ranked San Jose State 15-7 in day one of the 12-team event.

Against Ottawa, freshman Nina Munson and junior Sarah Owens scored three goals apiece, while Leigh Lyter, Drew Halvorson, Imani Clemons and Cami Mras each scored two.

Against San Jose State, Caitlyn Snyder led the Gauchos with three goals.

On Saturday, UCSB faces No. 23 Wagner at 11:45 a.m. and No. 19 Princeton at 4 p.m. at Campus Pool.
