The UC Santa Barbara women’s volleyball team came out on the short end of a five-set marathon at UC Davis, falling 28-26, 22-25, 40-38, 22-25, 15-9.
The loss dropped the Gauchos two games behind first-place Hawaii in the Big West standings. They are 14-3 in conference and 18-9 overall.
The crucial third set was one for the ages. The set was tied 22 time, there were 10 lead changes and each team fought for 29 consecutive set points. The Aggies took the lead for good at 39-38 on an Olivia Utterback kill and finished the set after an attack error by the Gauchos.
In the fourth set, the two teams would battle back and forth yet again. The Gauchos gained the upper hand as they took the lead for good at 17-16.
In the fifth set, the Aggies started with an 8-3 run, capped by an attack error by the Gauchos.
UC Davis earned its eighth win of their Big West Conference season and improved to 13-14 overall.
The Aggies had four players with double digit kills, led by Utterback’smatch-high 25. Demari Webb had 18, Josephine Ough had 15 and Megan Lennhad 11. Casi Newman had a match-high 61 assists
Defensively, Shira Lahav led all Aggies with a match-high 21 digs. Utterback had 14, Megan Lenn had 13, Newman had 12 and Julia Ng 10 digs respectively.
Michelle Ohwobete led UCSB with 21 kills along with 18 digs. She also added on four blocks to contribute with a total of 23.5 points.
Mehana Ma’a racked up 38 assists on the evening while securing 16 digs. Brianna McKnight contributed 10 kills and had 14 digs. She also led the team in aces with two. Tallulah Froley and Tasia Farmer had 17 and 10 kills, respectively, to help their team from the right side of the court. Froley also added two blocks to the stat sheet.
Deni Wilson and Macall Peed continue to be forces on defense for UC Santa Barbara. In the front row, Wilson led the team in blocks with five while Peed orchestrated the defense from the back row with 14 digs.
The Gauchos play their final road game of the season atUC Riverside on Saturday.
