The UC Santa Barbara women’s basketball team has earned the second seed in the 2020 Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Big West Women’s Basketball Tournament, earning a bye to the semifinal round of the competition, scheduled to take place this week at the Honda Center in Anaheim.
The Gauchos finished their regular season on Wednesday night at Hawai’i and had a bye on the final Big West gameday on Saturday. UCSB finished with a 9-7 record in conference play, as did UC Irvine and Hawai’i, but the second seed went to UCSB by virtue of its tiebreakers over the third-seeded Anteaters and fourth-seeded Rainbow Wahine.
The first two rounds of the Big West Tournament take place at Long Beach State’s Walter Pyramid on Tuesday and Wednesday. Fifth-seeded Long Beach State and eighth-seeded Cal Poly will play in the opening round on Tuesday, followed by sixth seed Cal State Fullerton and seventh seed CSUN.
UC Irvine and Hawai’i enter the competition in the second round on Wednesday, with the Anteaters playing against the lowest remaining seed.
Regular season conference champions and defending Big West Tournament victors UC Davis will play against the lowest remaining seed out of the opening rounds in the first semifinal at noon Friday, and UCSB’s game against the highest remaining seed will take place at either 2:30 p.m. or 30 minutes after the first semifinal.
