The UCSB women’s soccer team lost their Big West Conference opener on the road to Cal Poly Thursday in a 4-0 shutout.

The Mustangs scored in the 13th minute, and for the rest of the first half the Gaucho defense increased the pressure to keep Cal Poly from pushing through the back line. The first half ended 1-0.

After the break, Cal Poly added three goals while keeping UCSB scoreless, resulting in the 4-0 Mustang win.

UCSB sophomores Lauren Helwig and Krysten Vasquez put up two shots apiece to put pressure on Cal Poly’s defense. Along with them, Meg Burling and Samantha Christie also contributed shots.

The Gauchos, 1-6-2 overall, will be back at Harder Stadium on Sunday to host Pacific for their final non-conference game of the season. Kickoff is at noon.
