An electrical transformer in an underground vault exploded Thursday night, leaving parts of downtown Santa Barbara without power.

Firefighters were dispatched at about 9:20 p.m. to the vault on Anacapa Street at Cota Street, Battalion Chief Richard Ames of the Santa Barbara City Fire Department told Noozhawk.

There were no injuries, Ames said, but two nearby vehicles were damaged.

Southern California Edison Co. crews were on the scene assessing the situation and planning repairs, Ames said.

There was no estimate of when power would be restored to the 1,532 customers affected.
