Firefighters responded Monday evening to a vegetation fire threatening structures and prompting evacuations in El Capitán Canyon on the Gaviota Coast west of Goleta.

The fire, first reported at about 5:10 p.m. near the El Capitán Canyon campground, was reportedly burning near power lines and several camp cabins north of Highway 101.

Firefighters stopped forward progress of the blaze at 6:28 p.m., and it had burned an estimated 2 acres, according to Capt. Scott Safechuck of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

Crews remained at the scene to extinguish hot spots and improve containment lines, he added. The cause remained under investigation.

El Capitán Canyon personnel evacuated some of the campground cabins during the firefighting response, as some were threatened by the flames, according to Safechuck.

Water-dropping helicopters responded to the scene in addition to ground crews.

El Capitán Canyon, on the north side of the highway, has a luxury campground with cabins and yurts.

El Capitán State Beach, which is nearby on the ocean side of the highway, is currently closed to vehicles and campers, according to the California State Parks Department.

Crews from Santa Barbara County Fire Department, Los Padres National Forest, Vandenberg Space Force Base, and other agencies responded to the incident.
