Communities throughout Santa Barbara County are preparing to recognize Veterans Day Tuesday, with ceremonies, luncheons and public gatherings to honor the service of current and former U.S. military members.
While most local observances will be held on Tuesday, the Santa Barbara County Veterans Foundation (SBCVF) will host its fifth annual Santa Ynez Valley Salute to the Vets on Saturday in Solvang.
The free event will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Solvang Park, 1630 Mission Drive, with free parking available. Attractions will include a military vehicle display, games with prizes, a silent auction, raffle and live music by Out of the Blue.
Food, beer and wine will be available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting local veterans programs.
“The food and beverages are for sale, but those are all donations,” said SBCVF President Jerry Farmer. “So any money that we make on that is donated.”
Veterans Day is observed each year on Nov. 11, commemorating the 1918 armistice that ended World War I. That moment of peace is remembered nationwide at the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.”
On Tuesday, communities across Santa Barbara County will continue their observance with ceremonies, tributes and public gatherings.
Typically, those events would include speakers from Vandenberg Space Force Base but won’t this year due to the government shutdown and lapse in appropriations, a representative said.
