Vic Heredia hit a run-scoring double in the fifth inning and then shut down Cabrillo in the final two innings of a 3-2 baseball victory by Santa Ynez on Wednesday in the Santa Barbara County Tournament
Heredia drove in Bradley Alexander and then scored on a single by Caleb Cassidy to give the Pirates a 3-0 lead.
Cabrillo pulled to within a run, but Heredia struck out four in the last two innings to secure the win. Jackson Cloud started for Santa Ynez and allowed three hits in five-plus innings.
Cabrillo got solid pitching from Trevor Jure and Landon Maberry. The pair combined to allow five hits.
Tanner Costa went 2-for-3 for the Conquistadores (2-0).
Santa Ynez improves to 2-0. The Pirates host Lompoc on Saturday.
Santa Ynez Wins Boys Soccer Opener
Ricardo Romero and Bryan Garcia each scored two goals, lifting the Santa Ynez boys soccer team to a 5-1 win over Lompoc. in Hector Garcia’s debut as coach of the Pirates.
Erik Guerrero added and Alberto Luquin assited on Bryan Garcia’s first goal.
Santa Ynez Girls Soccer Wins 6-0
Neta Ofelia recorded a hat trick for the host Pirates in a 6-0 victory over Lompoc.
Ofelia scored her first goal off a through ball from Jazz Feeley in the second minute of the game. Less than two minutes later, she made it 2-0, finshing a pass from Catalina Kett.
In the 30th minute, Amelia Villa stole an errant Lompoc pass and started a series of one touch passes from Villa, to Lishman, to Feeley to a final touch into the net by sophomore Kaki Allen for her first varsity goal.
Feeley scored the fourth goal from Briana Rodriguez in the 63rd minute and Villa jumped on a loose ball and scored for a 5-0 lead.
Ofelia completed her hat trick in the 70th minute off a direct kick from Olivia Torres.
Santa Ynez Tennis Teams Fall to Arroyo Grande
Emmy Withrow and Morea Naretto won singles matches against the Eagles for the Pirates’ only points in a 7-2 loss in the girls match.
Withrow won the No. 1 singles match, 4-6, 6-1, 10-2, over Ellie Fuller. At No. 2, Naretto defeated Olivia Theaker, 3-6, 6-2, 10-7.
In the boys match, the Pirates lost 8-1. Charlie Hoose won the No. 5 singles match, 6-7, 6-1, 10-4.
“Every matchup was very competitive,” said Santa Ynez coach Nate Thompson. “Arroyo Grande edged us out in three matchups that went to a tiebreaker.”
UCSB Men’s Tennis Edged by Washington
For the first time this season, UC Santa Barbara claimed the doubles point, then jumped out to a 3-0 lead with the first two completed singles matches, but in the end, the result was a tight 4-3 loss to Washington on Wednesday afternoon at the Recreation Center Courts.
UCSB (1-3) had been 0-3 in doubles before winning the point against the Huskies.
“We changed-up the doubles lineup and it made a difference,” said head coach Marty Davis. “This was by far our best doubles performance of the season and it was good to get off the schneid.”
The UW duo of Thibault Cancel and Clement Chidekh won a 7-5 decision over the Gauchos No. 1 doubles team of Stefano Tsorotiotis and Alejandro Vedri, but UCSB rebounded at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. At No. 2, it was Victor Krustev and Joseph Rotheram defeating Alexis Alvarez and Jack Davis, 6-3. The Huskies team of Han-Chih Lin and Ewen Lumsden were up 5-2 and at match point in No. 3 doubles before Joseph Guillin and Kai Brady fought back and won in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (2).
Freshman Pablo Masjuan was the first singles match off the court at No. 5 as he handily defeated UW’s Jack Pulliam, 6-3, 6-1.
“This was Pablo’s most complete match of the season, Davis said. “And that’s a very good sign.”
Guillin was next off at No. 1 as he swept Chidekh, who entered the match with a 13-1 record, 6-2, 6-2.
“Joe played really well today,” Davis said. “This was the Joeseph Guillin we were used to seeing last year.”
The Huskies closed to within 3-1 when Lumsden defeated Tsorotiotis at No. 2, 6-4, 6-2. Next off was No. 3 singles as Davis topped Vedri, 6-4, 6-2, and then it was tied at 3-3 when Adam Torocsik edged Rotheram at No. 6, 7-6, 7-6.
“Their guy (Torocsik) hit some great shots down the stretch,” Davis said.
The match came down to No. 4 singles and, as it turned out, that was the only match of the six that was not a sweep as Han-Chih Lin bested Krusteve, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
“There was a little drama there,” Davis said. “Overall it was a very entertaining and close match.”
