The Santa Maria Public Library hosted a presentation to the American Association of University Women (AAUW) about Emergency Preparedness for Seniors, on Oct. 24, and a video recording is now available to the public.

Santa Maria Fire Department Emergency Services Specialist Roy Dugger gave the presentation, which highlighted best practices to prepare for emergencies including wildfires, earthquakes, flooding, and power outages.

Dugger has worked for the city of Santa Maria for 17 years and before that worked for 20 years with the American Red Cross, including disaster relief operations across the United States.

“Humans are resilient. Every single relief operation I have been on, the vast majority of people survived and recovered and created new lives afterwards,” Dugger said. “Today, I want you to understand that you do have the ability to be safe, that you are not without agency in this.”

The video recording of the presentation was produced by the city of Santa Maria communications team in the City Manager’s Office, and is available on the city’s YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/6A_rg624hxI.

The presentation also plays regularly on the city’s local Comcast Cable Channels 23 and 24. Santa Maria’s three public cable channels are also available on smart phones and smart televisions with the “City of Santa Maria TV” app.

The City Manager’s Office communications team also added the new video to its collection of emergency and disaster preparedness information, which includes resources on how to prepare for the El Niño wet season, available at cityofsantamaria.org/ready.
