With great sadness, we announce that Virginia Ellia Ybarra Sanchez passed away peacefully on May 27, 2025, at the age of 85, surrounded by her devoted family.

Born in San Antonio, Texas, she moved to Santa Barbara at the age of 15 and made it her lifelong home.

Although California became her home, Virginia took great pride in her Texas roots. She was a lifelong supporter of all things Texas, and remained closely connected with family and friends still living there, keeping in touch with loved ones well into her final weeks.

Virginia lived a full and meaningful life centered on faith, family and love. She cared deeply for those around her and was a constant source of comfort, strength and encouragement.

Her home was always welcoming and open to anyone in need of a meal, conversation, or a place to rest.

She was the proud mother of Tina Gutierrez-Grubbs (Lloyd Grubbs), George Gutierrez, Frank Gutierrez (Chris Mendoza), and Leticia Sanchez, and is now reunited with her beloved son John Gutierrez, who preceded her in death.

Virginia was the cherished grandmother of 11 grandchildren, the adoring great-grandmother of seven, and aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Many knew her affectionately as Grandma Virg, a name that spoke to the heart of who she was.

Virginia was a nurturing figure not just to her own family, but to countless others who found love, guidance and acceptance in her presence. She had a rare ability to make people feel like they belonged, and that gift touched generations.

Virginia loved sharing stories of her childhood and her experiences growing up, offering glimpses into a life filled with resilience and heart.

She had a deep love for animals, gardening, and being surrounded by family. The color red was her favorite and brought her joy, it could often be found in her wardrobe and throughout her home — bold, vibrant, and full of life, just like she was.

A woman of strong Catholic faith, Virginia drew strength and guidance from her spirituality throughout her life. Her home was filled with faith, laughter, and memories that will be cherished for generations.

Virginia will be remembered for her unwavering love, her gentle humor, her open heart, and her deep devotion to her family and community.

Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know and love her.

Rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, June 9 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Santa Barbara. Funeral mass will follow at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 10, also at Our Lady of Sorrows Church.
