The creativity, ingenuity and talent of Allan Hancock College’s dance students will be on full display as the college’s dance program prepares to present its annual Dimensions in Dance performance in a virtual format this fall at 7 p.m. Oct. 14-16.

As Hancock students adjusted to the new normal of remote classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students in the college’s dance program were asked to create and film their performances. The resulting videos display a range of themes and emotions that reflect the students’ personal journeys during turbulent, unprecedented circumstances.

“It’s not uncommon to experience a roller coaster of emotions on any given day,” said Jesus Solorio, Hancock Dance Program coordinator. “Although we are unable to meet in the theater this year, we want to express our feelings about all of these changes through movement.

“We asked these student choreographers to make a dance film focusing on their own experiences. It is all about the journey as we continue to dance alone together.”

This year’s performance includes a cast of 20 and features multiple dance styles, including contemporary ballet, contemporary fusion, and hip-hop.

The virtual performance is directed by Hancock Dance instructor Sydney Sorenson. Choreographers include Johnny Aguilar, Johna Emerick, Bridget Huffer, Damian Sanchez, Sydney Sorenson, Jadyn Trevino and Manny Zaragoza.

“As director of Dimensions in Dance’s virtual performance, I am wildly impressed with how the students have adapted to change,” said Sorenson. “Each of the choreographers has been working in a professional manner to create something uniquely theirs.

“The narratives they are working with are related to their personal experiences with the effects of COVID-19. It is a brave endeavor to express such vulnerability.”

Tickets for the virtual dance show are available for $10 at Eventbrite.com. The link to the performance will go live the day of the event and be on the AHC Dance webpage.
