The Dos Pueblos boys were hot from the service line Tuesday, racking up 11 aces in a 25-9, 25-10, 25-17 sweep of Oxnard in a Channel League match at Sovine Gym.
“It’s been a solid season from the service line, and tonight was just another example,” Charger coach Ehren Hug said, “players just going for it and ripping it in and getting rewarded with out of system attempts from the opposition that we can scoop and run offense with.”
Jan Schmidtchen led the aces with four. Ewan Richards and Matthew Wilcox led the kills with five apiece.
Nick Schultz-Clifford, Micah Goss and Wyatt Silver had four kills each, with Silver adding six assists and four digs.
Grant Hughes led the assists with 16, adding two kills, two aces and three digs.
“The setting duties were shared between seniors Grant Hughes and Ewan Richards, as well as sophomore Wyatt Silver,” Hug said. “I thought all three ran the offense well tonight and kept the Oxnard block guessing.”
The Chargers improved to 8-2 in Channel League play and 17-6 overall. They play at Santa Barbara next Monday at 6:30 p.m.
“Another great team effort tonight saw everyone contribute and have some fun in Sovine Gym,” Hug said.
San Marcos 3, Ventura 0
San Marcos swept Ventura Tuesday at home on scores of 25-5, 25-9, and 25-15, improving to 19-3 overall and 7-1 in Channel League play.
“It has been almost two weeks since we played our last match, and I was pleased with our effort and efficiency tonight,” Royals coach Roger Kuntz said.
“Junior setter Cameron Earls got the starting nod and showed why he is one of the premier setters in Southern California,” Kuntz said. “Cameron had great chemistry with our hitters, made good decisions, and his location was terrific.
“Junior Taj Chesluk had a solid night on the pins and we were able to get two sophomores some reps in their first varsity experience,” Kuntz added. “Sophomore Dustin Muth set game three and Calvin Frisell played in the OH2 position.”
The Royals host St. Joseph in a non-league match at the Thunderhut on Wednesday, starting at 5 p.m.
Bishop Diego 3, Dunn 0
Bishop Diego traveled up to Santa Ynez and came away with a 25-19, 25-9, 25-16 sweep against Dunn in Tri-Valley League play.
Braylon Katers had 11 kills and five aces and Liam Flood hit .579 with 11 kills on 19 swings, two aces and eight digs. Henri Benoit chipped in six kills on 11 swings.
“We were a little disoriented to start the match, but we were happy to come away with our second sweep at Dunn,” Cardinals coach Dillan Bennett said. “Their program is getting better, and their players are starting to play a little bit of club volleyball in their offseason.”
Bishop Diego is now 6-1 in the TVL and 17-10 overall. The Cardinals play at Laguna Blanca at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
