San Marcos opened Channel League play with a 25-21, 25-9, 25-16 sweep over Rio Mesa on Thursday.
Coach Roger Kuntz cleared his bench in the opener.
“Nate Loomer did a great job in his first varsity start as an opposite” said Kuntz of the junior. “Junior setter Cameron Earls did a great job running the offense with outside hitters Taj Chesluk and Charlie Magid earned many kills on the night.
“Landon Sheffey and Declan McClintock were solid in the middle as blockers and Cliff Ficker was the glue on defense.”
The Royals improve to 6-2 overall. They host Newbury Park tonight (Friday) for their first home match.
Santa Barbara 3, Oxnard 0
The Dons bounced back from their Wednesday loss to Mira Costa with a 25-17, 25-10, 25-14 Channel League-opening win at Oxnard on Thursday.
Coach Chad Arneson got everyone in the match and lauded the play of middle blocker Jackson Dejong and outside hitter Luke Zuffelato.
The Dons also received good play from opposite Austin Jaimes and setter Drake Young (14 assists).
Santa Barbara (2-1, 1-0) continues a busy week by playing at the Best of the West Tournament in San Diego on Friday and Saturday.
Dos Pueblos 3, Ventura 0
The underclassmen led the way for the Dos Pueblos boys volleyball team in a Channel League-opening sweep against Ventura on Thursday at Sovine Gym. The scores were 25-11, 25-14, 25-13.
“Sophomore middle blockers Kawin Ramko and Noah Grant along with setter Wyatt Silver introduced themselves tonight, helping the varsity to a sweep,” said coach Ehren Hug.
“Our team sees these guys grinding in practice day after day and it was sick to see them shine tonight. We are very excited for these three going forward.”
Senior libero Tzevon Lovejoy-Hall “was like a vacuum tonight, just picking everything up. He passed very confidently and was super strong from the service line with four aces.”
Lovejoy-Hall had nine digs.
DP heads to the San Diego area this weekend to play in the Best of the West Tournament.
Bishop Diego 3, Santa Ynez 0
Braylon Katers put down 12 kills on 19 swings and freshman John Michael Flint didn’t commit an error on seven swings, sparking the Cardinals to a 25-12, 25-21, 25-23 non-league sweep against Santa Ynez at the Brick House on Thursday.
“The guys bounced back well after a tough match Tuesday (a 5-set loss to Foothill Tech),” said coach Dillan Bennett. “They came in with focus and intensity in practice, and the work paid off tonight. We played with the aggression we lacked on Tuesday, and while it wasn’t pretty at times, we played much better.”
The Cardinals play on the road against St. Bonaventure on Tuesday.
Laguna Blanca 3, Dunn 0
Kincade Avery and Baylor Wilson filled in for a sidelined starting setter and combined for 34 assists in a 25-14, 25-7, 25-15 sweep of Dunn in a Tri-Valley League match.
“They worked very hard to keep the team firing offensively,” said assistant coach Kat Niksto.
Drew Levinson was a force in the middle, recording six kills on seven attempts for an .875 hitting percentage.
Tyson Deveze led the unbeaten Owls (6-0, 2-0) with 10 kills and Thomas Couvillion had seven kills and four aces.
