Wade Nieman scored seven goals and added an assist to help score an 18-4 Channel League win over Santa Barbara in a blustery evening Thursday at Peabody Stadium.

The Rams held a 5-1 lead after one quarter, and the Dons scored two goals in the second to trail 8-3 at halftime, as the aggressive Cate defense struggled with penalties later in the period.

“Goalie Barak Yanar was solid in net, holding the Dons to only one goal in the second half,” Cate coach Wade Ransom said. “Once again the Cate defensive trio of Caden Fuchs, Jack Whelan and Kristian Scurtis proved they may be the top unit in the Channel League.”

Cody Mast and Harry McAdam added three goals each for the Rams, with Mast adding an assist and McAdam three.

Cate is now 2-0 both in league play and overall. The Rams host Oak Park Tuesday, followed by the “always entertaining” Alumni Game on Saturday, April 1, Ransom said. All parents are invited to that game and the post-game festivities.
