A woman died in Santa Barbara on Tuesday afternoon after jumping off Stearns Wharf into the ocean, according to police.

City Fire and Harbor Patrol personnel responded to a reported water rescue call near the wharf around 12:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Police Sgt. Ethan Ragsdale said investigators learned that a woman “had voluntarily jumped over the railing and into the ocean.”

A bystander saw the woman in the water and jumped in after her to help, Ragsdale said. People on a nearby civilian boat pulled both people from the water, he added.

“The woman who initially jumped was unresponsive, and lifesaving measures were utilized in an attempt to revive her,” Ragsdale said.

Video footage shared with KEYT.com shows people on a boat pulling two people out of the water and doing CPR on one of them.

The woman was pronounced dead when the boat got to shore, police said.

The case is being investigated by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau.

“This is still an active investigation, and no foul play is suspected at this time,” Ragsdale told Noozhawk on Wednesday.
