A pedestrian was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with major injuries Wednesday afternoon after being struck by a southbound Amtrak passenger train.

Santa Barbara City Fire, police, and American Medical Response paramedics were dispatched to the area near the Las Positas Road overpass for a potential extrication or rescue call around 3:12 p.m. They then received additional information that the incident involved a train hitting a pedestrian.

The pedestrian is an adult female who was transported to Cottage Hospital with major injuries from the collision, according to Santa Barbara City Fire Battalion Chief Jon Turner.

Shari Franklin, who was traveling on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Train 786 from San Luis Obispo to Oceanside, said the train came to a “hard stop” around 3:15 p.m.

Passengers were alerted by conductors that they believed the train hit something and they needed to call emergency services, Franklin said.

It was later confirmed that the train did hit someone, and that the train would be delayed for a while.

Franklin said passengers were told that a new train was coming to latch onto their train and push them through the rest of their journey.

“It’s difficult because you’re not given any information about what actually happened,” Franklin said. “Their priority is making sure you get on your way and what they’re doing to help you complete your trip. But when you say a train hit something, and there’s no intersections around you, you know it’s not a car.”

The train restarted operations around 4:15 p.m., according to police.
