Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Congregation will host a workshop on Compassionate Communication, featuring nonviolent communication trainer Rev. Carlton E. Smith, 9 a.m.-3 pm. Feb. 17 at the Live Oak campus, 820 N. Fairview Ave., Goleta. The event is free, but advance registration is required.

The workshop aims to explore the transformative possibilities of practicing nonviolent communication, as outlined in Marshall B. Rosenberg’s seminal work “Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life.”

Participants will delve into methods that foster open hearts and break the cycle of hurtful communication. 

“We are excited to host Rev. Carlton E. Smith and provide our community with the opportunity to learn from a Unitarian Universalist leader of his caliber,” said Rev. Jonathan Young, minister at Live Oak. “This workshop is not only a chance to enhance personal communication skills but also an invitation to connect with others in a meaningful way.”

Rev. Carlton E. Smith serves as the Lead for the Pacific Western Region of the Unitarian Universalist Association He holds two degrees from Howard University (BBA and M. Div). He was introduced to nonviolent, compassionate communication while serving a Northeast Unitarian Universalist congregation in a leadership crisis.

Rev. Carlton has been a candidate for both U.S. Congress and for state senate in his home state of  Mississippi. He was a founding member of the Organizing Collective for Black Lives of Unitarian  Universalism. He serves as a board member for the Living Legacy Project and Campaign Board member for the LGBTQ Victory Fund.
