Dos Pueblos boys wrestling wrapped up the regular season by dominating Oxnard en route to a 57-11 dual meet victory on Monday’s Senior Night.
Meanwhile, the girls fell 42-18, earning all points due to forfeits.
The seniors that were celebrated were Victoria Bernard, Shaun Vague, Sylis Penniman, Sam Ramos, Ryan Risdall, Andrew Cuevas, Alyssa Warner, Grant Yelles and Owen Vollmar.
On the boys side, the Chargers earned five individual victories thanks to forfeits from the Yellow Jackets.
Brandon Velasquez (157), Patrick Sullivan (126) and Shaun Vague (132) all captured their wins by decision to add to the team point total.
Rounding out the winners for Dos Pueblos were Sam Ramos (165), Francisco Espinosa (106) and Thiago Hidalgo (113), who all earned pins to close out their bouts.
“The team was on fire,” Chargers coach Matthew Bernard said. “They wrestled solid and really wanted to show how far they have come since the season opener.”
The league championships will take place on Saturday, Feb. 3.
Rio Mesa 38, San Marcos 34
The Royals ultimately fell in a back-and-forth dual meet against Rio Mesa.
San Marcos got out to an early 22-0 lead after winning the first four matches of the dual thanks to a major decision win from Dalton Shupe and pins by Cole Dominguez, Aust Javanbakht and Lucas Sanchez.
“Cole Dominguez continued his in-season dual matches undefeated and continues to impress coaches,” Royals coach Eric Flores said.
However, the Spartans came roaring back by winning the next five bouts, two by forfeit.
Then, Caleb Miners (106) and Angel Estrada (113) each won their matches for San Marcos.
Rio Mesa then punched right back with a pair of victories to set up the final matchup between San Marcos’ Jacob Brown and Rio Mesa’s Aaron Flores.
Flores took an early 4-0 lead and seemed to be in control, but Brown flipped the script and got Flores on his back, securing a pin to round out the competition.
“Jacob Brown continues to do really well and shows heart, aggressiveness and an unwillingness to never give up,” Eric Flores said. “These matches were exciting to watch.”
Unfortunately for San Marcos, the late pin by Brown was not enough to overcome the deficit as Rio Mesa escaped with the win.
