A 34-year-old man has been arrested as the suspected driver of a pickup truck involved in a hit-and-run crash over the weekend that killed a motor scooter rider in downtown Santa Barbara, according to the Santa Barbara Police Department.
Salvador Jimenez of Santa Barbara was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and driving on a suspended license, said Sgt. Ethan Ragsdale.
He remained in custody on Monday, with bail set at $500,000.
A second person — Estefani Nava Guerrero, 26, of Santa Barbara — was arrested in connection with the case, Ragsdale said.
She was booked on suspicion of being an accessory to a felony and destruction of evidence, with bail set at $20,000.
A third possible suspect connected to the case was interviewed by detectives but was not arrested, Ragsdale said, adding that charges may be referred to the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office.
The crash took place at about 2 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Santa Barbara and Cota streets.
Police have released few details about the collision, but witnesses told Noozhawk that the pickup driver kept going after the crash, with the scooter wedged underneath the front end of his vehicle.
The driver subsequently fled on foot.
The victim was identified Wednesday by the sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau as Dane Murdock Angus, 31.
A memorial gathering for him is planned on Friday.
Jimenez and Guerrero were arrested late Saturday night after turning themselves in at the Santa Barbara police station, Ragsdale told Noozhawk.
