A man riding a motor scooter was killed early Saturday in an apparent hit-and-run collision with a pickup truck in downtown Santa Barbara, according to the Santa Barbara Police Department.

The crash took place at about 2 a.m. at the intersection of Santa Barbara and Cota streets.

Sgt. Bryan Kerr told Noozhawk investigators were still trying to identify the driver of the pickup truck, and no one was in custody.

The name of the victim, who was declared dead at the scene, was not released pending notification of relatives.

While authorities were still trying to piece together the details early Saturday morning, witnesses told Noozhawk that the pickup driver kept going after the crash, with the scooter wedged underneath the front end.

Kerr would not confirm that the crash was a hit-and-run, but witnesses said a K-9 unit was called in to search for the driver.

Police have the vehicle in custody.

“We are still trying to gather statements and identify the driver of the other vehicle,” Kerr said.

The department’s critical incident traffic team was called in, Kerr said, and was collecting video as part of the investigation.
