One person died and two others were wounded after being stabbed early Friday in downtown Santa Barbara, according to the Santa Barbara Police Department.

Several foot patrol officers responded at about 12:20 a.m. to the 500 block of State Street after being flagged down by a passerby, who reported a man with a knife, police said.

They found a male victim lying on the ground with a stab wound, and two other people nearby who also had been stabbed.

Additional officers, city firefighters and AMR ambulances responded to the scene, and the three victims were taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

“Despite life-saving efforts, one of the individuals passed away at the hospital as a result of their injuries,” police said in a news release.

That person’s name was not released pending notification of relatives.

The other two victims were in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Luis Gerado Terrazas, 29, was arrested in connection with the stabbings, police said.

A significant portion of State Street was shut down to conduct follow-up and crime-scene investigations.
