The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office has identified 80-year-old Steven Kingsley Close from Carpinteria as the bicyclist killed in a collision with a vehicle Tuesday morning.

The fatal collision was reported at 8:44 a.m. Tuesday on Highway 150/Rincon Road between Highway 101 and Via Real in Carpinteria.

“It appears that the bicyclist made an unsafe lane change in front of the car as they were traveling in the same direction and was hit by the car,” Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Raquel Zick told Noozhawk Wednesday.

Zick also previously said that the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash remained at the scene.

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the collision and closed down the roadway for several hours Tuesday after the collision.
