Motion Theatre Dance Company announces “Journey,” a dance production to be presented Sunday, May 5 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Center Stage Theater in Santa Barbara.
Award-winning artist Maria Rendina Frantz will premiere “Trois Saintes de la Mer,” a mystical dance choreographed to the complete “Moonlight Sonata” by Ludwig van Beethoven.
Also premiering is “Journey,” a dance about immigration to music by Italian composer Nino Rota.
“It’s a humorous, motion theater piece set in the 1920s, highlighting the life of an Italian immigrant before the Great Depression, like my Nonna coming to the U.S. for a better life,” Rendina Frantz said.
Both contemporary ballet and modern dance will be on the program, including the students at Santa Barbara Movement Arts.
“When I moved here, I brought what I began in Santa Fe in 1995,” Rendina Frantz said. “Movement Arts that encompasses dance, yoga and other movement methodology.”
Also on the program are some talented dancers and graduates from the UCSB dance program presenting three exciting, original contemporary works you won’t want to miss. Kelly O’Connor created a duet “openspaces” on the concepts of self-awareness, and the relationship between inner-space and outer-space to music by Nicolas Jar. “Locate” is a continuation of a contemporary ballet piece by Sammy Gerraty while studying the effects of human noise pollution on the lives of marine mammals, and seeks to spread awareness about its devastating impacts. Gianna Burright will perform “Turn It On, Turn It Off” about a woman searching for understanding and closure from a traumatic relationship. Also joining the dance troupe are Tara McAninch and Hannah Kistner.
Come on this journey and discover the authentic quality and rare beauty of the Motion Theatre Dance Company. You will be pleasantly surprised!
