Two of seven Pioneer Valley High School students earned finalist honors during the Santa Barbara County Architectural Design Competition held recently at Allan Hancock College.

The Panther finalists were Jarell White and Bryan Garcia Garibay.

Also participating from PVHS were Mayte Perez, Mane Villagomez Paxtor, Adamari Lopez-Rodriguez, Wendy Mendoza, and Carlos Miramontes-Vega.

The challenge for high school students this year was to renovate a retro gas station into a residential dwelling, and design an art studio in a similar style adjacent to the home.

Students were tasked with incorporating a renewable energy source, ample guest parking, and a garden into their designs.

“I am incredibly proud of all the students who participated in the Santa Barbara County Architecture Design Competition,” said Chris Silva, instructor of digital arts and mechanical. “Our students showcased remarkable levels of creativity, precision, and dedication, embodying the spirit of Pioneer Valley High School with pride.”

The all-day design competition, fashioned after the Architects Learning Exam, was started in 1991 to introduce high school students to the world of architecture and the design process.
