Several Mark Richardson Building and Construction (MRC) students now have brand new work boots, thanks to recent from Boots & Bags and Wolverine Boots, the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District (SMJUHSD) reports.

Donations were facilitated through Boots & Bags, a local nonprofit that helps promising construction students get the required basic tools, workwear and driver’s licensing.

These items are required to secure an apprenticeship with the Carpenter’s Union, as well as give students the best chance of securing any entry level construction job.

“My new boots are super comfortable and high quality,’’ said Miguel Reyes, a student at Pioneer Valley High School. “I’m very thankful I received them.’’

“With the generous support of our industry partners and local community, we were able to provide those participating in SkillsUSA upcoming competitions construction boots so our students will be compliant with the competition rules,’’ said Glen Holmes, Building & Construction teacher.

“When our students are equipped with basic tools, proper workwear, they have a great shot at securing entry level construction jobs,” he said. “MRC students will have everything they need to secure employment in the construction industry immediately upon graduation.

So far this year Boots & Bags has donated over 25 pairs of boots to our students.”

The charity’s goal is to bridge the gap between education and employment, offering practical support to enable students’ job prospects and ensure a successful start in the workforce.

The SMJUHSD has about 40 Career Technical Pathways and about the same number of industry partners.
