After a lengthy delay, the name of the woman killed on Oct. 6 in a single-vehicle crash in a downtown Santa Barbara parking structure was released Thursday by authorities.

The victim was Katherine Kwan, 84, of Los Angeles, according to Raquel Zick, public information officer for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau.

Kwan was a passenger in a sedan that slammed into a wall in the Lot 10 parking structure at Anacapa and Ortega streets.

She was declared dead at the scene, and the injured driver was taken to the hospital.

Noozhawk made multiple requests to the Santa Barbara Police Department for the victim’s identity, but until this week was told it was not releasable under state law.

Police are continuing to withhold the driver’s name, citing the ongoing investigation into the crash.

“Given the driver’s current medical condition and our inability to interview the driver at this time, we are withholding the driver’s name at this stage to maintain the integrity of the ongoing investigation,” Police Chief Kelly Ann Gordon told Noozhawk.

Witnesses said it appeared that the white sedan, which sustained major front-end damage, entered the parking structure from Ortega Street and did not slow down, crashing into the wall.
