A new independent school, Acton Academy Santa Barbara, is opening in Santa Barbara this fall.
Acton Academy Santa Barbara is part of a global network of learner-driven schools redefining what education can look like, according to school officials.
“Acton Academy trades worksheets and standardized tests for Socratic discussions, real-world challenges, and the belief that every child is a hero on a journey,” they said.
Founded by Max Peck, a local Marine Corps veteran, father and entrepreneur, the school is designed for families who believe the traditional system no longer serves the world our children are growing up in, he said.
“We’re not preparing learners to sit still, memorize facts, and follow directions,” said Peck. “We’re preparing them to think critically, lead with character, and forge their own path in a rapidly changing world.”
At Acton, learners work at their own pace through hands-on quests, launch real businesses, and set personal goals they care about.
“Guides (not teachers) use open-ended questions — not lectures — to challenge young people to think deeply, solve problems, and learn how to learn, how to be, and how to do,” the school said.
Peck and his wife, both parents of two young children, said they were drawn to Acton during the pandemic when they began rethinking their own educational assumptions.
“We realized we didn’t want to outsource our kids’ potential,” he said. “We wanted them to build courage, curiosity, and grit — not just test scores.”
Acton is currently enrolling ages 5-7 for its inaugural year, with plans to expand each year as learners grow.
Families interested in applying must first tour the studio and complete a unique audition process that ensures a good mutual fit.
