Flowers and sand helped the Lompoc Elks prove “Life’s a Beach” as the organization’s entry provided a classic display of “Summertime Fun & Friends” duing the Lompoc Valley Flower Festival Parade on Saturday morning.
More than 50 entries traveled along Lompoc streets in celebration of the 67th annual Flower Festival.
The festival opened Wednesday and runs through Sunday at Ryon Park, in the 800 block of Ocean Avenue.
The theme of this year’s festival and parade was “Summertime Fun & Friends,” displayed in various ways on entries as they rolled, marched and walked the route.
The Lompoc Elks entry included a sand castle and names of the Central Coast’s popular coastline destinations, including Surf and Refugio beaches.
Carrying the tradition of riding one of the most flower-covered entries in a community-built float, the parade included 2019 Flower Festival Queen Emily Rich and her court. They were followed several entries later by 2018 Queen Kaitlyn Chui.
Dignataries, including Lompoc City Council members, traveled the route in convertibles sportiing large sprays of flowers across the hoods and trunks of the vehicles.
Flowers could be found on costumes and clothing of participants.
Riding in a place of honor was Grand Marshal Robin Dunaetz, from Surf Connection and the organizer of the Lompoc efforts to boost sales at local shops.
Lompoc’s parade also attracted a number of drill teams from Southern California, including the popular Compton Sounders, San Bernardino Pacesetters and Los Angeles Fifes & Drums.
As the festival marks its fifth and final day Sunday, food booths, carnival rides and vendors can be found at the park along with live music and other performances.
Sunday’s entertainment will be Latin themes and include the Latin Ladies tribute band playing the music of Selena, Gloria Estefan, Shakira and others from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Earlier Sunday, Soul Fyah will perform from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 805 Cali Tejano will take the stage at 1:45 p.m.
Festival admission Sunday will cost $5 for those ages 13 and older with children 12 and younger admitted for free.
The Lompoc Valley Festival Association organizes the annual celebration of the community’s role in the flower industry.
