It’s not unusual to hear calls for assistance on a specific aisle in a grocery store, but one batty visitor wasn’t the typical customer, receiving a helping hand from firefighters after being stuck for more than 24 hours on the ceiling.

A crew from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department’s Station 12 responded Thursday to a request from the Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network to assist the flying mammal at the Albertsons store on Calle Real in Goleta, fire Capt. Scott Safechuck said.

In revealing the unusual call, Santa Barbara County Fire posted a photo of smiling firefighter Bret Debone holding a presumably equally happy bat somewhat camouflaged by the man’s glove.

“We’re happy to report that the bat was released uninjured and happily flew away — a small but important reminder of our commitment to all aspects of community safety and wildlife care,” Safechuck said.

The recent bat assist call came weeks after a North County firefighting crew from Station 23 in Sisquoc responded to a camel assist call after a youngster became distressed when it found itself stuck on a hillside in Tepusquet Canyon as the mother camel awaited below.
