Some things you just can’t get enough of.

Ice cream is one of them. Especially McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams.

Far Rahimian and his father, Haas Rahimian, have opened Haas’s Fine Ice Cream in the Five Points Shopping Center in Santa Barbara, and even though it’s a new shop, it’s actually also really old.

You see, Haas’s opened a McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams shop — wait for it — in the exact same location in 1982. The store lasted about five years at that space before Fresco opened. Now, 43 years later, Far Rahimian is back to extend the legacy.

“It’s amazing. It’s hard to believe,” he said. “It’s full circle.”

In 1987, Haas’s moved the business to the corner of Mission and De la Vina streets. It operated as a McConnell’s, while the actual ice cream was made at the corner of Canon Perdido and Milpas streets.

Haas’s sold the Mission and De la Vina shop to McConnell’s in 2005 and was supposedly out of the ice cream business. Then, Little Alex’s, which recently also moved to the Five Points Shopping Center, asked Haas’s if it wanted to sublease part of its space — and lo and behold, Haas’s returned to selling McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams, where it began in 1982.

McConnell’s opened in 1949. Its original location was at the corner of State and Mission streets, where Garrett’s Old-Fashioned Restaurant currently stands.

“McConnell’s said we will support you and give you everything you need,” Rahimian said. “All of the ice cream is McConnell’s.”

The Five Points location has all of the reputed flavors, from cookies-and-cream and peppermint stick to passion fruit lemon swirl and eureka lemon and marionberries.

The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 10 p.m. on Sundays.

“It’s a ‘pinch me’ moment for all of us,” Rahimian said. “We never thought this would happen like this.”
