The owners of a 1920s commercial building in downtown Santa Barbara are planning for a summer opening for their new makers and vintage merchants marketplace, according to Nicole Roehrig, who is handling the business’ marketing.

Roehrig said 1105 State St. this year will be occupied by the State Street Trading Post. Owners Todd and Angela Hartmann are planning to have more than 50 merchants operating inside.

The three-story, 10,000-square-foot space will now be modeled in the mid-century modern style, with a “bright and light aesthetic” that centers on “refined luxury,” Roehrig said.

It will be split into smaller retail spaces and rented out individually, “sort of shops within a shop,” she said.

The Hartmanns — who live in the Santa Barbara area with their three kids — bought the building a few years ago. Angela Hartmann, who is focused on the State Street marketplace’s interior design and aesthetics, has a background in design.

Roehrig said it’s a project that Todd Hartmann and his father have always had in their back pocket. The pair were regulars at vintage flea markets during his childhood.

The family owns other businesses in California — from San Francisco to Los Angeles — that “tend to foster the local creative community,” Roehrig said.

Roehrig said she can’t share who the vendors will be at this time, but she encouraged anyone interested in operating in the space to apply on their website.

Updates also will be posted to the marketplace’s Instagram.

Longtime boutique Tienda Ho was previously located at that site. That closed in 2021 after two decades of business.
