A cold beer can be nice, but sometimes you just need some caffeine.

The Brewhouse in Santa Barbara has expanded its operation to add a coffee bar to its location at 229 Montecito St., where it plans to serve drinks, pastries and to-go options.

Partners Grant Danely and Joal Clayton said the idea for the shop came as the brewery began to expand into the conjoining space. The Brewhouse serves lunch, dinner and beer.

As the restaurant portion of The Brewhouse shifted, the pair realized there were no other coffee shops in the surrounding area.

“It was the original bar from The Brewhouse when it first opened 30 years ago,” Danely said. “As they expanded down this building, which is five actual addresses, that bar got a little bit left out. It has its own entrance, and we decided this was kind of the thing for it.”

Clayton said he believes what will set their shop apart from other local coffee shops is the fact that they are family-owned, as well as the quality of their product.

Another way they’re looking to set themselves apart is their purchase of La Marzocco GB5. The European model is known for being used by Starbucks during its rise in the 1990s, before the company moved away from it to an automatic model.

The Brewhouse also partnered with a small roaster in Ventura for its beans.

The shop is in its soft launch but is open seven days a week between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Brewhouse currently serves only drinks at the coffee bar but soon will have pastries for sale and intends to sell salads and portable meals for people on the go.
