Santa Barbara has lost another vegan restaurant.

Mesa Verde on Santa Barbara’s Mesa closed Monday.

The company took to Instagram to spread the news: “It is with great sadness that we announce the closing of Mesa Verde. Thank you for all our loyal customers throughout the years who have supported us and celebrated with us.”

Santa Barbara City Councilman Mike Jordan, who lives on the Mesa and represents District 2, said another restaurant most likely will take its place.

“While unfortunate, restaurants have shown remarkable longevity and loyal customer bases on the Mesa, and I’m confident either a new version or replacement business will soon fill the void,” Jordan said.

“We will miss all of you,” the company added in its post. “Continue to eat plants. Thank you for being a part of our journey.”

The restaurant, which made the Michelin Guide, opened in 2015 at 1919 Cliff Drive.

It’s the second closure for the local vegan scene this year. Oliver’s in Montecito closed earlier this year.

Bibi Ji Open Again

Indian food restaurant Bibi Ji has reopened and is now taking reservations.

The Santa Barbara restaurant moved from 734 State St. to 1213 State St., the former site of McDonald’s.

The menu highlights “the abundance of local produce and local seafood served sea-to-table with traditional Indian curries accompanied by an extensive list of rare natural wines,” according to its website.

Hotel Bed Taxes Down

Transient occupancy taxes are below budget by 3.1%, according to the City of Santa Barbara.

The city collected $2.9 million in hotel bed taxes for May, and $28.8 million overall this fiscal year.

About $26.4 million came from hotels and $2.4 million from short-term rentals.

Anacapa Architecture Breaks Ground on State Street

Anacapa Architecture & Interior Design broke ground on its new office headquarters at 1023 State St. in Santa Barbara.

Caitlin Hensel, commercial real estate broker for Hayes Commercial Group, celebrated the news.

“We sold them the building a few years ago and have been very patiently waiting to see it all come to fruition,” Hensel wrote on Instagram. “This is what State Street has been waiting for. A game changer!

She said the renovation of the space includes an internal garden, skylights, and an open courtyard and that it will be “distinctively Anacapa.”

Santa Playa Mariscos

Santa Play Mariscos, a new restaurant from Yona Estrada, owner of Yona Redz, is getting closer to opening in Santa Barbara.

“Mariscos is a classic type of Mexican seafood,” the company posted on Instagram. “We will be introducing dishes with shrimp, fish, octopus, shellfish and more. Served in a variety of different ways, cooked or crudo dishes for all the local marisco lovers.”

The restaurant reportedly is “opening soon” at 1230 State St.
