Salud Carbajal and Thomas Cole will face-off in the November general election for the 24th District Congressional seat after coming out on top in semi-official election results Tuesday night.

Carbajal, the Democratic incumbent, was first elected in 2016 and received 55.4% of the votes, according to the Secretary of State’s Office. Cole, a Republican, had 36.6% of the vote and Helena Pasquarella, a Democrat, had 8.0% of the vote.

The district includes Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Countries and parts of Ventura County.

California has a top-two primary system which means the top two vote-getters in the primary election for state and federal offices will advance to the November election, regardless of their political party.

Carbajal is seeking his fourth term in Congress and said he plans to focus on reducing gun violence and tackling the fentanyl epidemic.

Cole founded Analytics 805, an election data research company in Montecito, and has been involved in local conservative political circles.

Pasquarella is a teacher and former photojournalist who wants the United States to reduce investment in military funding and focus on Americans.

More results will be posted on the County Elections Office website and Secretary of State Elections website as ballots are received throughout the night from polling places, mailed ballots and ballot drop box ballots.
