Carpinteria High and Cate boys water polo made the quick trip down to Ventura to compete in the Buena Tournament this weekend.

The Warriors enjoyed a successful weekend with a fourth-place finish, while the Rams slotted into seventh place.

Carpinteria

The Warriors kicked off the tournament on Friday by sweeping their doubleheader against Long Beach Poly (13-6) and Camarillo (11-10).

In the win over Long Beach Poly, Carpinteria’s defense led the charge by allowing just two goals in the first half to pull away.

The second game of the day was a more tightly contested affair as both teams exchanged blows, but Sky Korling found the back of the net late in the fourth quarter to secure the game-winning score.

The Warriors followed that up with losses to Murrieta Valley (8-6) and Ventura (13-8) on Saturday to finish the weekend in fourth place in the Platinum Division.

Micah Smith scored four of the six Carpinteria goals against Murrieta Valley, while Jake Ehlers and Korling each scored three times against Ventura.

“Our boys learned a lot from the first day and showed they can compete with quality programs,” Carpinteria High head coach Russell Russo-Levasseur said. “With adjustments to our transition defense and pressure passing, we’re confident this group will continue to make major strides.”

The Warriors will host Channel Islands on Tuesday.

Cate

After the Rams went 1-1 on Friday, they turned around and fell to East Redlands by a score of 13-12 before taking down Camarillo, 10-8.

Cate held a slim lead in the fourth quarter against East Redlands, but couldn’t make the final defensive stops and ultimately allowed East Redlands to regain the lead and earn the win.

Sebastian Brine filled up the stat sheet with five goals and three assists in the loss, while Fletcher Prince scored three goals. Andrew Sheshunoff tallied 12 saves in the cage.

The Rams shook off that loss and came out firing en route to a win over Camarillo in the seventh-place matchup. Cate poured on seven goals in the first half and withstood the Camarillo comeback effort to hold on for the win.

Brine once again led the offensive attack with four goals, while Liam Moes ended the game with three goals and Prince scored twice. Prince also racked up three assists.

Defensively, Jae Wykoff paced the team with seven steals and Elliott Paige picked up five of his own.

Cate will take on Villanova Prep on the road on Tuesday.
