The Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department invites the community to celebrate the artistry and cultural traditions of Día de los Muertos in the 2026 Catrín and Catrina Contest, 6-7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25 at the Allan Hancock College Fine Arts Complex, 800 S. College Drive.

The contest will be held as part of the city’s annual Día de los Muertos celebration.

Open to participants 14 years and older, the contest provides an opportunity to showcase Día de los Muertos-inspired attire, makeup and creativity while celebrating the cultural traditions associated with Catrines and Catrinas.

Contestants will compete for cash prizes — $500 for first place, $350 for second place, and $150 for third place.

They will be judged on creativity, attire, makeup, and overall presentation. Costumes should reflect the traditions and spirit of Día de los Muertos while remaining respectful, culturally appropriate, and family friendly.

Contestant check-in begins at 4:30 p.m. at the Recreation and Parks Department booth; all contestants must be checked in no later than 5:30 p.m.

Judging begins around 6 p.m. with winners announced immediately following the competition. Contestants must remain in costume and be present during both the judging and awards presentation.

Registration is $25 per contestant, and advance registration is required by Friday, Oct. 16. Space is limited.

Cancellations should be made at least 48 hours before the event. Online registration is available at www.cityofsantamaria.org/recreation.
