Charges were still pending Friday against a suspected DUI driver in a crash in Goleta a week ago that killed one of his passengers.
Prosecutors are awaiting reports on the incident from the California Highway Patrol, Santa Barbara County District Attorney John Savrnoch told Noozhawk.
Daniel Velez-Valerio, 18, of Santa Barbara was behind the wheel of a Ford pickup truck that slammed into a tree and caught fire at about 11 p.m. on April 20 , according to the CHP.
The crash occurred on westbound Cathedral Oaks Road, just west of Kellogg Avenue.
Velez-Valerio was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence, both felonies, according to CHP Officer Jonathan Gutierrez.
A rear-seat passenger — Christopher James Roulo, 22, of Mountain View and Santa Barbara — was fatally injured in the crash, according to Raquel Zick, public information officer for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.
Velez-Valerio and a second passenger, Patrick J. Marasciullo, 22, of Isla Vista, both suffered major injuries, including serious burns, the CHP said, and reportedly are being treated at a Southern California hospital.
Details on their conditions were not available.
