The fatal vehicle crash on Highway 154 Saturday morning was caused when the driver of a Nissan Altima traveled over the double-yellow lines into opposing traffic, the California Highway Patrol said Monday.
The two-vehicle collision was reported at 1:24 a.m. Saturday near San Antonio Creek Road, which is on the Santa Barbara side of Highway 154.
The Nissan driver, a 22-year-old man from Florida, was critically injured when he drove across the lines directly into the path of an Infiniti QX60 SUV and he was declared dead at the scene, CHP Officer Michael Fabila said.
The Infiniti driver had major injuries from the crash, he added. Four other people in the vehicle also had injuries from the collision and were transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.
CHP investigators have not yet determined whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, Fabila said.
The CHP has not released the name of the Nissan driver who died in the crash, pending notification of next of kin.
They released the names of the injured driver and passengers in the Infiniti on Monday: Maria Estella Suarez Jimenez, 57; Rosa Marie Suarez, 69; Ofelia Vargas Suarez, 61; Maria Suarez Garibay, 75; and Jaime Jimenez Suarez, 53, all Oxnard residents.
