On the evening of July 25, Santa Barbara came alive in one of the most charming and community-spirited ways possible.

The occasion? A free outdoor screening of the cult classic film Best in Show, put on by UCSB Arts & Lectures as part of its “Dog Days of Summer” series.

The setting? The breathtakingly beautiful Sunken Garden at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse.

Add a DJ, some very talented dogs, and a crowd that felt like half the town, and you’ve got the recipe for an unforgettable summer night.

My friends and I arrived early, knowing this would be a popular event. We came prepared with cozy blankets, a few bottles of sparkling water, and a picnic basket full of snacks from the local deli.

We scoped out what we felt was the perfect spot — center lawn, with a great view of the screen and enough space to spread out and relax.

Around us, other groups were doing the same: some with lawn chairs and full dinners, others simply lying on beach towels and enjoying the evening breeze.

There was a joyful energy in the air as people set up their spots and greeted friends they ran into on the lawn.

Before the movie even started, the night was already brimming with entertainment.

A live DJ set from DJ Darla Bea filled the garden with upbeat music, her style setting the tone for what would be a night full of fun and good vibes. Her playlist created an atmosphere that felt festive and perfectly matched the film’s quirky charm.

“What really stood out was the feeling of community. This wasn’t just about a movie — it was about coming together.”

As people settled in, the show truly began — not on screen, but on the lawn.

Perfect Puppy Academy put on an agility demonstration featuring some impressively trained local dogs. The crowd erupted in applause and cheers as dogs leaped over hurdles, zipped through tunnels, and expertly followed their handlers’ commands.

It was a heartwarming display and a great reminder of how deep the bond between humans and dogs really goes.

There were also raffle prizes up for grabs before the screening began, adding another layer of excitement to the evening. Guests gathered near the front to hear winning numbers called, hoping to walk away with a fun goodie or perhaps a gift from one of the event sponsors.

Everything about the pre-show programming made the night feel like more than just a movie — it felt like a true celebration of summer in Santa Barbara.

As the sun disappeared behind the courthouse, the screen lit up and the unmistakable opening of Best in Show began.

Directed by Christopher Guest and released in 2000, the film is a hilarious mockumentary that follows a cast of eccentric characters as they compete in the prestigious Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show.

The performances are largely improvised, and the cast — which includes Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Jennifer Coolidge and Fred Willard — delivers some of the most memorable comedic moments of the genre.

Watching the movie in this setting, surrounded by so many other people laughing at the same scenes, quoting lines under their breath, or marveling at how absurdly brilliant the characters were, felt like being part of something bigger than just a screening.

It was communal, relaxed and funny in the way that only a well-loved movie can be when shared with a group.

The crowd’s laughter was frequent and full-bodied. Everyone seemed in sync with the humor, completely engaged with the film and the moment.

I’ve seen Best in Show more times than I can count, but something about watching it on the grass, under the stars, with friends and neighbors, made the whole thing feel brand new again.

What really stood out was the feeling of community. This wasn’t just about a movie — it was about coming together. The diversity of the crowd, the warmth between strangers, and the shared love for dogs and laughter created a night that felt genuinely meaningful.

Events like this are reminders of what makes Santa Barbara such a special place to live.

UCSB Arts & Lectures did a fantastic job curating not only a beloved film but an entire experience.

Every detail, from the music and activities to the seating layout and sound quality, made the evening feel polished but still relaxed. It was thoughtfully planned and wholeheartedly enjoyed.

If this event was any indication, the rest of the “Dog Days of Summer” series is something to mark on your calendar.
