More than 50 College & Career Bound (CCB) teens met recently with 35 representatives spanning industries from healthcare and finance to aviation, entertainment, and public service in a career fair expo hosted by United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County (UBGC).
The event was a showcase of what happens when a community comes together to invest in the dreams of its youth, organizers said.
“Our CCB Career Fair was a true success,” said Nick Behrman, UBGC Board president. “It reflected the dedication of our employees, board, and community members all working together to ensure our teens have access to explore various career paths, while also encouraging them to dream big, and reminding them that they can accomplish their career goals.”
The expo featured local leaders and organizations such as Cottage Hospital, Santa Barbara County Fire Department, American Riviera Bank, Delta Airlines, Dos Pueblos High School, Westmont College, Notes for Notes, and UBGC. Also making appearances were Carpinteria Mayor Natalia Alarco and Goleta Mayor Paula Perotte.
“Our first annual CCB career fair expo was an incredible and meaningful night for our members,” said Christianne Rojo, UBGC interim CEO. “It was inspiring to see our members explore different job sectors and share career goals.
“I am truly grateful to the many individuals who took time out of their busy schedules to participate in this event. I am also very proud of our College and Career Bound coordinator Manny Murillo, and our UBGC team for organizing the first of many for years to come.”
Beyond the career fair, the night transformed into a countywide Teen Night Celebration with teen members from Santa Barbara, Goleta and Lompoc coming together for a fun evening.
Teens gamed in the Cox Innovation Lab using VR headsets, a PS5, and a Nintendo Switch; they baked treats, sang karaoke, and played basketball and soccer in the newly resurfaced Ben Howland Gymnasium, named for the legendary UCLA coach and Goleta Club alum.
The night ended with a live DJ set from DJ Slic Vic, a Carpinteria Club alum, who had everyone on their feet.
