The Santa Barbara County Public Works Department will host its April Household Hazardous Waste Event, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Sunday, April 7, at the county’s Santa Ynez Valley Recycling and Transfer Station, 4004 Foxen Canyon Road, Los Olivos.
The event is open to residents in the county’s unincorporated areas, and the city of Solvang, but not to Buellton residents. Buellton residents should contact the city for information on its upcoming hazardous waste collection on May 4.
Those participating in the April 7 event can drop off common household items, including automotive fluids, cleaners, paint, pesticides, batteries, and unwanted electronics such as computers and TVs.
Residents can also bring home-generated sharps, like needles and syringes. Note that sharps must be delivered in rigid, puncture-proof containers to protect staff. For more about acceptable materials, visit www.LessIsMore.org.
All materials being deposited should be easily accessible in the back of participant’s vehicle (car trunk or the bed of a truck).
In addition to one-day collections, the county offers other ways to recycle hazardous waste.
The ABOP facility at the Santa Ynez Valley Recycling and Transfer Station accepts antifreeze, auto batteries, motor oil, oil filters, and latex paint, 9 a.m.-noon every Saturday. County transfer stations accept electronic waste free of charge from residents.
Hazardous waste and electronic waste as described here should never go into the trash or recycling container. They must be disposed of through special hazardous waste collection programs or at electronic waste drop-off sites, the county notes.
Some municipalities and private waste-management companies also operate household hazardous waste and electronics collection centers. For more about these programs, call 805-882-3603 or visit the county’s waste reduction website.
