Did you know that in the spiritual realm, it matters a lot who you belong to — whether you are among those have been legally “purchased” — or alternatively, whether you are still in an “unpurchased” state.
Your eternal destiny hangs in the balance.
I was in a supermarket the other day, and on the door of the men’s restroom a sign said, “Do not take unpurchased items into the bathrooms” (I assume this is to prevent shoplifting).
But that word “unpurchased” really caught my attention. My mind immediately went back to a key Bible passage in Revelation 5:8-10 that mentioned the word “purchased” prominently in a dramatic scene in Heaven:
“When He (God) had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song, saying,
‘Worthy are You to take the scroll and to break its seals; for You were slaughtered, and You purchased people for God with Your blood from every tribe, language, people and nation.
You have made them into a kingdom and priests to our God, and they will reign upon the earth.’”
In the original New Testament language, that word “purchased,” [above] means:
“ἀγοράζω agorázō, ag-or-ad’-zo; … properly, to go to market, i.e. (by implication) to purchase; specially, to redeem—buy, redeem.” _____Strong’s
To “redeem” is to buy back. In the case of believers, Christ bought us back from the slave market of sin at the price of His precious life blood.
The Apostle Paul also wrote in Galatians 3:12-14:
“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us — for it is written: ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree’ — in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”
Our purchase price was as high as it gets, as explained in 1 Peter 1:17-19: “… knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.”
This Offer Can be Refused
But be careful here. Just because Jesus died and shed His blood for you 2,000 years ago, you must respond by receiving His offer and making it your own, as described in John 3:16-18:
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him. The one who believes in Him is not judged; the one who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.”
High Stakes
All men are born “unpurchased” (judged already) and must be born again spiritually, otherwise, the consequences of remaining “unpurchased” are harsh
According to John 3:36, “The one who believes in the Son has eternal life; but the one who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”
As I wrote in my book, My Origin, My Destiny, “If I make the right choice now, these words of Jesus can assure me: ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going’.”
How About You?
Have you been bought and paid for by the one and only Savior of your soul? It’s a choice, you know; you don’t just drift into it.
As written in John 11:25-26, “Jesus said … ‘I am the resurrection and the life; the one who believes in Me will live, even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die?”
In the Bible, that word “belief” is not a noun but a verb. It is active, it “bets the farm.”
It doesn’t stop at mental ascent but joyously welcomes Christ into our hearts to literally saturate and transform every part of our lives.
Have you done this?
