The following argument has been used like a bludgeon against Christianity for centuries:
“Oh you Christians are so narrow minded. You keep saying there is only one way to Heaven. What about all the other religions in the world? Are they all wrong?”
Jesus Christ was the first man in history to make this seemingly audacious claim, from John 14:6, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father (in Heaven) except through Me.”
Later, the Apostle Paul echoed the same assertion, in Acts 4:12, “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among mankind by which we must be saved.”
Along with the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ, Christianity stands or falls on its claim that Jesus is the only door through which one can gain admittance to eternal glory. So, what possible logic could be behind such a sweeping claim?
One man sinned; another Man saved him.
The symmetry of the argument makes perfect sense. Adam was our progenitor and as such was the singular founder of the human race.
And when Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden by intentionally rebelling against his God, all creation immediately spiraled downward, not only for Adam, but for his offspring through the ages (that’s you and me).
Similarly, another “Adam,” a “Last Adam” was sent by God later to establish a new race of people who would love and obey God, as described in 1 Corinthians 15:45: “So also it is written: ‘The first man, Adam, became a living (natural) person.’ The last Adam was a life-giving (supernatural) spirit.”
Here is how the Apostle Paul explained it:
“The gift (of salvation) is not like that which came through the one who sinned (eternal death); for on the one hand the judgment arose from one offense, resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the gracious gift arose from many offenses, resulting in justification. For if by the offense of the one, death reigned through the one, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.”
In Romans 5:16-19, Paul goes on to explain that these events are profoundly consequential for every human ever born:
“So then, as through one offense the result was condemnation to all mankind, so also through one act of righteousness the result was justification of life to all mankind. For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.”
Its interesting that most people accept the first proposition — that Adam was our singular human “father” and that he sinned in the Garden (even the great artists and sculptors of the Middle Ages made that clear) — yet many dispute the second assertion that Jesus Christ is the only way back to God.
Here’s why …
He went to Heaven to settle our debt and open the way.
Following His death on the cross 2,000 years ago, Christ made a momentous journey that only He could make on our behalf, as written in Hebrews 9:24-28:
“For Christ did not enter a holy place made by hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us … now once at the consummation of the ages He has been revealed to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. And just as it is destined for people to die once, and after this comes judgment, so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.”
Hear this: (1) No one, NO ONE else, could enter Heaven on His own recognizance; (2) No one, NO ONE else’s blood could have the intrinsic eternal value to put away the sin of mankind forever; (3) Therefore, No one, NO ONE else, could constitute our “ticket” into Heaven.
Do you get that?
In “The Nature of Regeneration,” evangelist Oswald Chambers wrote: “Just as the nature of sin entered into the human race through one man, the Holy Spirit entered into the human race through another Man (see Romans 5:12-19). And redemption means that I can be delivered from the heredity of sin, and that through Jesus Christ I can receive a pure and spotless heredity, namely, the Holy Spirit.”
How About You?
Are you still looking for “another way” when the one and only way is staring you in the face?
Be glad there is this one shining way that is sure and attested by God Himself in His Word. What if there was none?
