Kitchell, the Art, Design & Architecture Museum at UCSB, and AIA Santa Barbara will host a discussion by Christopher Hawthorne, Los Angeles chief design officer in the Mayor’s Office, in another segment of the Kitchell Architecture and Design Lecture Series.
The event will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, at Alhecama Theatre, 215 A E. Canon Perdido St.
Hawthorne will offer a visual tour and critical overview of buildings by an emerging generation of firms working in a post-digital, post-star-architect vein.
“With his experience writing about the architecture of Los Angeles and now the chief design officer of the city, his insights and observations about our profession will be compelling and how that might relate to Santa Barbara will be interesting,” said Robert Ooley, president of AIA-Santa Barbara.

Before joining City Hall, Hawthorne was the Los Angeles Times architecture critic, 2004-18. He is professor of the practice at Occidental College, where since 2015 he has directed the Third Los Angeles Project, a series of public conversations on architecture, urban planning, mobility, and demographic change in Southern California.
Hawthorne has also taught at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, Columbia University, and the Southern California Institute of Architecture.
A frequent collaborator with KCET-TV, the PBS affiliate in Los Angeles, Hawthorne wrote and directed the documentary That Far Corner: Frank Lloyd Wright in Los Angeles. He received an L.A.-area Emmy Award as executive producer for the 2016 KCET program Third L.A. with Architecture Critic Christopher Hawthorne.
